News Flash: Fat People Know They’re Fat

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people purposely bully and embarrass people who are overweight, all in the name of opening their eyes or helping them.

Fat shaming doesn’t work.

Overweight people in a recent study at the Florida State University College of Medicine who faced discrimination were actually more likely to become obese than those who didn’t.

News flash: Fat people know they’re fat.

As a bona-fide fat person, I can attest that pointing this obvious fact out isn’t going to help anyone. It’s going to feed cycles of guilt and coping mechanisms and breed mistrust. A better way to help is to be supportive. If an overweight friend has expressed a wish to eat healthier, don’t suggest a late-night fast food run. Instead of ordering pizza, cook a healthy meal together. Instead of watching the game, invite your friend to a pick-up game.

Support is one of the strongest medicines in the world.
