My, How the Tables Have Turned

Every other time I’ve lost weight, I obsess about food. I plan out what I will eat and when, down to the last bite. It’s the only way I’ve ever been able to lose more than about 10 pounds.

This time, things are different. I’m NEVER hungry. I know most of that is because of the problems with my gallbladder. This is the ONLY good thing about my gallbladder problems. I’ve lost all my desire for the foods that just 7 short weeks ago held nearly complete control over me.

The problem I have now is not eating enough.

I know, most of you who came to my blog because you’re trying to lose weight are ready to click away, thinking I’m lucky to have gallbladder problems and to have my food cravings vanish. That’s part of the reason I’m seriously considering postponing surgery; I LIKE the side effects! If I can keep the pain at bay, I can live with the reduced appetite. It’s almost like I had gastric bypass surgery without the cost or potential side effects. The possibility of gut-wrenching pain will keep me strictly adhering to the diet, too!

The problems I’ve been facing from too little calorie intake:

  1. Foot cramps. The gallbladder attacks have given me a new perspective on pain, so I won’t say these are debilitating. But they are distracting and occasionally wake me up at night. I’ve been trying to include more natural sodium and potassium sources to reduce them. I also notice that the days I take in more water, I seem to have fewer cramps.
  2. Lightheadedness. Every once in a while, especially when I take in extremely low calories (less than 300 or so), I do experience wooziness and exhaustion. At that point, I try to force myself to eat something, even if I don’t think I can. I’ve been relying on organic apple juice, as I seem to be able to get that down ok even if solid foods upset my stomach. I’ve even read that apple juice can be good for gallstones.
  3. Well-meaning interveners. A coworker left a chocolate peanut butter cup package on my chair today. I know she was trying to be nice, but the only thing I could think of was PAIN! OUCH! AVOID! DO NOT PASS GO! I’ve decided to tell all my coworkers that I’m struggling with preventing gallbladder attacks so they stop asking concerned questions at lunch when I pull out my salad (and it takes me three hours to get through it). A few have mentioned “it’s really not healthy to eat NO fat…” I usually respond by letting them know that I appreciate their concern, I’m under a doctor’s supervision, and that’s the current doctor recommendation. Of course, I can’t eat this extremely low fat forever, as that would be damaging to many body systems – but for now, this is what I need to do to preserve my health.

Hopefully, this extremely low-fat diet will prevent the pain, and the weight will continue to come off at a decent pace.
