Holy SH*% Working Out is Awesome

Sorry for the delay in posting. I’ve been crazy busy with work…. and working out! I am now officially a Zumba fanatic. I go at least three times per week, at the gym I’ve joined and at a local adult community group.

If you would have told me last year I’d be doing this now, I would have laughed. Hysterically. In your face. With no shame. But I am. After getting off about 50 pounds, I decided that I really needed to put my health first, and joined a gym. My company provides a discount, so the membership is super cheap.

I was never a group fitness person before, because I was always too self conscious. Zumba always sounded fun, but I am also seriously uncoordinated when it comes to dance. Whatever I’m shaking, it’s always in the opposite direction as everyone else in the class!

A coworker dragged me to a Zumba class early this year to try it – and I was hooked. Don’t get me wrong; I was horrible at it. I still am horrible at it. But focusing on the instructor and trying to keep up and remember the steps totally distracts me from the fact that I’m torching a sh*#-ton of calories and not even glancing at the clock. My Fitbit tells me I burn between 700 and 900 calories per workout; and based on my post-loss data analysis (yup, I’m that much of a geek), I know this has to be at least mostly accurate.

I’m lucky to belong to a gym where the instructors ROCK. They made me feel welcome from day one, even thought their small-knit community has been attending the same classes (and learning all the routines!) for years.

And although my weight loss has slowed a bit (albeit to what I’ll admit is now a healthy pace), I’ve seen more changes in my body in the past two months of working out than the four before that not.

If anyone’s on the fence about trying Zumba, DO IT. Seriously – what do you have to lose, other than your belly?!

My university gym has recently replaced my beloved step n tone with Zumba. All of my friends are begging me to go and join in and I’m yet to do it. Maybe I’m just being stubborn!! x

The only way to know whether you’ll like it is to try it! But give it a few classes; it can seem overwhelming the first time, especially if you’re in a class with lots of regulars. You have to get some of the steps down to really be able to focus on the workout.
